Open Letter to Qatar Swimming Association

Dear President of Qatar Swimming Association, Khalil Al Jabir

It was brought to our attention that QSA is currently hosting the two-day FINA World Cup series leg (October 21-22), which will be followed in December 2014 by The FINA World Swimming Championships. We were distressed to see Qatari residents report seeing the Israeli flag marking the presence of Israeli swimmers on social media. We were also surprised to see that their participation is expected in December for The FINA World Swimming Championships.

We, Qatar Youth Opposed to Normalization, made up of Qatari citizen and residents, are strongly opposed to this visit because it violates boycott guidelines set by The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI). In addition to this, this visit will only serves the interests of Israel by presenting it to the world as a “normal” country. Unfortunately the systematic breaches of international law since 1948 and the constant unpunished violations of the human rights of the Palestinian people mean that Israel is not a “normal” country. The military occupation, the colonisation measures and the apartheid system imposed by Israel in Palestine since 1948, are not policies proper to a “normal” country.

Sports are are based on the notion of "fair game", and there is nothing fair about the Israeli occupation. Last year during the Israeli Apartheid Week 2013 in Doha, the released Palestinian hunger striker and football player Mahmoud Sarsak spoke. Sarsak was on the Palestinian national team when he was arbitrary arrested in 2009 at a checkpoint and detained without trial for 3 years. Sarsak’s message was clear, countries must respect the call of The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI), until Israel ends its denial of basic Palestinian rights, including the right to education and freedom of movement.

Based on this, and adhering to the PACBI call, we are calling on QSA to remove the Israeli flag and suspend the invitation to Israeli participants today and in any organized events in the future. We are aware that the QSA must adhere to FINA guidelines, yet we still expect that a country that has always always been so vocal in condemning Israeli violations, will take a bold positions today.
